A traditional designation, now considered by many to be obsolete and sometimes offensive, for the indigenous peoples inhabiting the Arctic regions of North America and Greenland. The preferred terms today are 'Inuit' (in Canada and Greenland) or 'Yupik' (in Alaska and Siberia).

The term 'Eskimo' is avoided in academic and official contexts in favor of 'Inuit' or 'Yupik'. Its use persists in common language but should be used with caution.
