Definition

A rustic boat, usually made of wood, formed by logs or planks tied together, traditionally used in artisanal fishing, especially in northern Portugal and Brazil.

In Portugal, it is mainly associated with the northern region, namely Póvoa de Varzim and Esposende.

The fishermen of Póvoa de Varzim still use jangadas for shad fishing.
The jangada, although simple, is very stable in the water.
