Inhabitant of the rural areas around Lisbon (the 'saloia' region). By extension, a peasant or rustic person, sometimes with a pejorative connotation of lack of sophistication.
The 'saloios' came to sell their produce at the Lisbon market. / He was called a 'saloio' for his simple ways.
Etymology
Do árabe 'al-ṣaḥl' (a planície, o campo), através do moçárabe. Originalmente designava o habitante da região saloia (campo em torno de Lisboa).
